  • Notes

    • J. M. Sanger (born 1816) arrived in South Australia aboard the barqu
e "William Barrett" in 1837, and was the first to smelt copper ore i
that State. Later he went to Melbourne and was prominent in many ent
erprises. After managing several properties he took up "Wangamong", ab
out 15km south of Oaklands NSW, off Sanger Darcy Road, in 1850. He als
o held "Goombargna" in the early 1850's before selling the lease to Du
sford and Bear. A Merino stud was started at Wangamong in 1853 whe
Sanger bought ewes bred at "Camden Park", New South Wales, and ram
s from "Ercildoune", one of the first Merino flocks in Victoria. Th
e township of Corowa was gazetted in Feb 1859, and J.M. Sanger owned t
he land on the eastern side of what was to become Sanger St. He offere
d blocks for sale at 25/- per acre. He established one of the first v
ineyards in the district on the outskirts of Corowa and by 1878 had 2
5 acres of vines. He often travelled down the Murray River to Echuca b
y paddle-steamer, thence by train to Melbourne where he would organiz
e the sale of his wines to merchants in the city. In 1907 his sons C
. D. Sanger and W. B. Sanger (who had been managing the property sinc
e 1889), bought it from their father and divided it, C. D. Sanger taki
g "South Wangamong". The Homestead was built in about 1905, and presu
mably the other buildings of the Homestead complex also date from abou
t the time of the property division. The property was noted in 1910 a
s having about 7000 acres. Sources: Burton, Brian: "Flow Gently Past"
