Snowy River Ramble

The once-mighty Snowy River rises on the slopes of Australia’s highest peak Mt Kosciuszko in NSW and tumbles its way down 2200m over 425km to empty into Bass Strait at Marlo in Gippsland, Victoria. Our journey into this iconic territory was to begin on the Barry Way from Jindabyne NSW, follow the river and its tributaries to the sea and get some good 4WDing in on the way home. We just happened to choose a week when high winds and torrential rain fell over the two states! Plans quickly changed to hunker down at a community campground for a couple of days while the worst of the weather passed, then take an easy route home via the coast and the Snowy Mountains Highway rather than tracks that would have been very slippery and blocked with fallen trees.

The inclement weather and closed roads meant we missed some of the highlights we’d wanted to visit including Jacksons Crossing and Moscow Villa Hut. Just have to do the trip again 😉!
