  • Notes 

    • At an early age in Scotland Robert Edmond Liddell showed evidence of m
      usical talent, and commenced a study of the organ. Development of thi
      s gift was a significant contribution to his later service as an Offic
      er of the Salvation Army. The family worshipped at the Tharsis Stree
      t Church, Glasgow, and Robert 'TED' was a member of the Foundry Boys a
      d received his early Christian training there. When living at 1009 Ga
      gard Road, Provanmill, Glasgow, he attended school at Hogganfield ne
      ar Hogganfield Lock, from the age of 5 until migrating to Australia i
      1911. After arriving in Moreton Bay, Brisbane, just before 12th Bir
      thday, he attended Musgrave Public School, but after a few months he w
      as required to leave school because his father John Edmond had an acci
      dent whilst chopping wood. He was a plumber, and was also a lift drive
      at two stores in Brisbane; one being Chapman's Department Store. I
      t was from here he entered the Salvation Army Training College, Peters
      ham, on 30 Oct 1920. Commossioned on 5 Jan 1922, his first appointmen
      t was to Singleton and then a year later to East Maitland, where his w
      ife-to-be Alice Cotterill was a Salvation Army soldier. He also serve
      d in Rockhampton and New Zealand before returning to Australia in 1945
