James Betteridge was convicted on 29 Jun 1831 at Stafford Assizes on t
wo counts of larceny, fined 6d. and transported to Australia for 7 yea
s (1). He arrived on the "Isabella I" in 1832 and was assigned to Dr
. Mitchell (2).
On 10 Dec 1842 he was free and was granted permission to marry Elizabe
th Lloyd, 22, who had arrived on the "Margaret I" after a similar sen
tence had been imposed and was by that time on a Ticket of Leave. Th
e ceremony was performed at Maitland, NSW. (3)
In 1851 he was identified as an uncle of William and Daniel Cotteril
l and living at East Maitland, New South Wales, on their passenger lis
t upon their immigration to Australia. (4)
