• Notes

  Sir Richard Reynell, of Pyttney (or Peteneya) Co. Somerset, lived in t he reigns of Henry II and Richard I. During the absence of King Richar d in the Holy Land, he had custody of the castles of Exeter and Launce ston from 1191. He defended these castles against John, Earl of Moreto , the King's brother, who in the King's absence endeavoured to usur p his power. On the death of Richard and the accession of John, Richar d was deprived of the estates at Pyttney. Sir Richard's son recovere d the lands and became the Earl of Devon. Sir Richard was also Sherri ff of Devonshire from 1191 to 1194.
