Notes
Queen Eleanor was the queen of two kingdoms, and the mother of two mor
e kings. Any book on great women in European history is sure to mentio
her. As Duchess of Aquitaine, Eleanor controlled lands vaster tha
the king of France. So, it's not a surprise that the French king wou
ld seek an alliance with her. She married King Louis VII of France i
1137. As queen of France, she accompanied Louis on the Second Crusad
e. There, Eleanor and many other women dressed as amazons -- somethin
g that shocked the men of the time. Even more shocking was the scanda
l that she might have had an affair with her uncle Raymond of Antioch
. Louis and Eleanor had their marriage annulled in 1151. In 1152, sh
e married Henry, Duke of Normandy, who was 11 years younger than Elean
or. Two years later, Eleanor had become queen of England. In the 1170
's, she sided with her sons as they rebelled against Henry II. In 1173
, she was caught fleeing, disguised as a man. Eleanor was imprisoned f
or most of the rest of Henry's reign. But even in prison she plotted
, encouraging rebellion against King Henry II. She was freed right aft
er Richard became king. Richard was her favourite son, but when Richar
d died, she supported King John's bid for the throne. A rival claimant
, her grandson Arthur of Brittany, briefly imprisoned Eleanor in 1202
. King John promptly rescued her. She died in 1204 at the age of 82
. She had enormous influence over England, including forcing Richar
d to marry Queen Berengaria. Eleanor was a great patron of arts and a
chitecture. Source: Wright, Allen W., The Search For A Real Robi
