Henry Wyat (or Wyatt) Radford arrived in the Colony aboard the "Greeno
ck" on 8 Jan 1824, after being Surgeon of Her Majesty's 56th, 65th, 46
th, 62nd, 17th (& 48th?) Regiments and Deputy Inspector of Hospitals i
the Indian Service. He served in the Peninsula wars 1808-1814, and a
t Pindaree 1817-1818. He was a Hospital Mate 24 Dec 1808 to 18 Apr 181
0 [Medical Officers in the British Army 1660-1960]. Convict servant
s Henry Bodson, James Hickman and Francis Gallagher were assigned to h
im in 1824, and in 1827 he and his wife and child were being supplie
d from the stores at Newcastle. By 1828 they were living at Elderslie
, Patrick Plains and had a convict servant Francis Burdett, who had ar
ived on the "John Barry". In January 1836 Margaret Maddox, who had ar
ived on the "George Hibbert" in 1834, was returned to Government Serv
ice as she was "in the family way". Another servant, Joseph Chambers
, who had arrived on the "Hooghley", was assigned to Dr Radford in Jan
uary 1836. Prior to his death he owned "Ravensfield Station" on the H
unter River. Ravensfield consisted of 2000 acres. After his death an
d until 1847 it was occupied by William Geddes but in May of that yea
it was advertised to let by Alexander Spark, the new husband of hi
s widow. On the property were a cottage and houses, a malt kiln and "e
very convenience for a dairy farm" all surrounded by strong fences
. . It seems likely that Ravensfield was named after the Parish of th
e same name in Yorkshire, England, of which Henry's father Rev Thoma
s Radford was Rector for some 41 years and which may have been his bir
th place. References: http://www.linleyfh.com/oursecondsite-p/p571.ht
