Sir Henry Stafford Northcote, 1st and last Baron Northcote was educate
d at Eton College. He was a clerk in the Foreign Office in 1868, and i
1869 graduated from Merton College, Oxford University, with a Bachel
or of Arts (B.A.). and Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1873. He was secretar
y to the British members of the claims commission relating to the Alab
ama between 1871 and 1873 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.. He was Privat
e Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer (his father) between 18
77 and 1880. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.
) in 1880 and was M.P. (Conservative) for Exeter between 1880 and 1890
. He was financial secretary to the War Office between 1885 and 1886
, and was Surveyor-General of Ordnance between 1886 and 1887. He was c
eated 1st Baronet Northcote [U.K.] on 23 November 1887 and was invest
ed as a Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (G.C.I.E.
) in 1900 and was created 1st Baron Northcote, of Exeter, co. Devon [U
.K.] on 20 January 1900. He held the office of Governor of Bombay bet
ween 1899 and 1903 and was Governor-General of Australia between 190
3 and 1907. He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Mic
hael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1904 and as a Privy Counsellor (P.C
.) in 1909. On his death, his titles became extinct.
