  Alfred enlisted on 28 Aug 1915 as a Private in the AIF 8th Infantry Br igade, 30th Battalion, Service No. 3208. At that time his address wa s given as High St, East Maitland, occupation miner. He was embarked o HMAT Honorata on 2 May 1916 in the 7th to 12th Reinforcements, boun d for Europe. (http://www.awm.gov.au/cms_images/awm8/23_47_3/pdf/0320. pdf). Records also show he was emabarked on HMAT SS Port Napier on 1 7 Nov 1916, with the notation "Previously served 7th Rfts., (Reinforce ments) 30th Btn.". He died of wounds in the Somme, France, on 28 Au g 1918 (http://www.awm.gov.au/roh/person.asp?p=145-11847), and was bur ied at the Daours Cemetery.
