  Duncan I Biographical Notes

• Notes

Donnchad mac Cri?na?in (Modern Gaelic: Donnchadh mac Cri?onain) anglic ised as Duncan I, and nicknamed An t-Ilgarach, "the Diseased" or "th e Sick" (died 14 August 1040) was King of Scotland (Alba). He was so of Cri?na?n, hereditary lay abbot of Dunkeld, and Betho?c, daughte of king Malcolm II of Scotland (Ma?el Coluim mac Cina?eda). Unlik e the "King Duncan" of Shakespeare's Macbeth, the historical Duncan ap pears to have been a young man. He followed his grandfather Malcolm a s king after the latter's death on 25 November 1034, without apparen t opposition. He may have been Malcolm's acknowledged successor or ta? aise as the succession appears to have been uneventful. The early pe iod of Duncan's reign was apparently uneventful, perhaps a consequenc e of his youth. Macbeth (Mac Bethad mac Findla?ich) is recorded as hi s dux, literally duke, but in the context ? "dukes of Francia" had h alf a century before replaced the Carolingian kings of the Franks an d in England the over-mighty Godwin of Wessex was called a dux ? thi s suggests that Macbeth was the power behind the throne. In 1039, Dun can led a large Scots army south to besiege Durham, but the expeditio ended in disaster. Duncan survived, but the following year he led a army north into Moray, traditionally seen as Macbeth's domain. Ther e he was killed, at Pitgaveny near Elgin, by his own men led by Macbet h, probably on 14 August 1040.
